Trust: Resting in the character of God

Trust is a very relatable word to human beings because our lives, relationships, and communities are built on trust. One of the first pictures that comes to mind when I think about trust is a child resting safely in a father’s arms. The child may not understand everything happening around them, but they feel secure because they know who is holding them.
A child feels confident when a father throws him gently into the air. The child trusts his father when he asks him to jump into his hands. There is a beautiful and almost unexplainable confidence in the child’s heart that his father will always catch him. That confidence comes from relationship, love, and experience.
In the same way, trusting God is resting, depending, and being confident in His character even when we cannot understand the circumstances of life. Trust is not merely believing that God exists; it is confidently surrendering ourselves to His love, wisdom, and faithfulness. It is choosing peace over fear because we know our Father is good.
Trust grows out of a personal relationship with Jesus. The more we get to know Jesus, the more we begin to understand His nature and character. The more closely we walk with the Holy Spirit, the more we begin to know the heart of the Father. As we experience His faithfulness through every season of life, our confidence in Him deepens.
Trust is not built in a moment; it is cultivated through daily fellowship, obedience, prayer, and encounters with His presence. The closer we walk with God, the easier it becomes to rest in Him completely.
As I was studying about trusting God, I found myself reflecting on four important questions:
- When do I trust God?
- Why should I trust God?
- What happens to me when I trust God?
- How can I live a life trusting God?
1. WHEN DO I TRUST GOD?
- All the Time
Psalm 62:8 –
“Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.” (NKJV)
God never asks us to trust Him occasionally or only when life feels manageable. He calls us to trust Him at all times — in joy, uncertainty, pain, waiting, and breakthrough.
- Forever
Isaiah 26:4 –
“Trust in the LORD forever, For in YAH, the LORD, is everlasting strength.” (NKJV)
Our trust in God is not seasonal. His strength and faithfulness never run out.
- When I Do Not Understand
Proverbs 3:5-6 –
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (NKJV)
Trust begins where human understanding ends.
- When I Am Afraid
Psalm 56:3 –
“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” (NKJV)
Fear becomes an invitation to place our confidence in God.
- When I Am in Trouble
Nahum 1:7 –
“The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.” (NKJV)
God remains our refuge in every storm.
- When I Am Waiting
Isaiah 40:31 –
“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” (NKJV)
Fear becomes an invitation to place our confidence in God.
- When Circumstances Look Impossible
Mark 5:36 –
“Do not be afraid; only believe.” (NKJV)
Faith chooses to trust God even when circumstances appear impossible.
2. WHY SHOULD I TRUST GOD?
We trust God because of who He is. Trust is built on knowing the nature and character of God. The more we know His heart, the easier it becomes to rest in His hands.
- Because God is Love
1 John 4:8 –
“He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (NKJV)
God’s love is unconditional, sacrificial, and everlasting.
- Because God demonstrated His Love for Me
Romans 5:8 –
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (NKJV)
The cross is the greatest proof of God’s love for us.
- Because God is Faithful
Lamentations 3:22-23 –
“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” (NKJV)
God never abandons His promises.
- Because God Keeps His Promises
Hebrews 10:23 –
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” (NKJV)
Every promise of God is backed by His faithfulness.
- Because God is Holy
Isaiah 6:3 –
“And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!’” (NKJV)
God is completely pure, righteous, and perfect.
- Because God Is Good
Psalm 34:8 –
“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” (NKJV)
God’s intentions toward His children are always good.
- Because God is Merciful
Ephesians 2:4-5 –
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” (NKJV)
God does not treat us according to what we deserve.
- Because God Is Gracious
Exodus 34:6 –
“And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.’” (NKJV)
Grace is God freely giving us what we could never earn.
- Because God is Patient
2 Peter 3:9 –
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (NKJV)
God patiently walks with us through every season of life.
- Because God Is Just and Reighteous
Deuteronomy 32:4 –
“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.” (NKJV)
God always does what is right.
- Because God is Truth
John 14:6 –
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” (NKJV)
Everything God says can be trusted completely.
- Because God Cannot Lie
Numbers 23:19 –
“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (NKJV)
God’s Word never fails.
- Because God Never Changes
Malachi 3:6 –
“For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” (NKJV)
Hebrews 13:8 –
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (NKJV)
God’s nature, love, and promises remain constant.
- Because God Is All Powerful
Jeremiah 32:17 –
“Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” (NKJV)
Nothing is impossible for God.
- Because Nothing Is Impossible for God
Luke 1:37 –
“For with God nothing will be impossible.” (NKJV)
No situation is beyond God’s ability.
- Because God Knows Everything
Psalm 139:1-4 –
“O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” (NKJV)
Nothing is impossible for God.
- Because God Is Always Present
Psalm 139:7-10 –
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.” (NKJV)
We are never alone.
- Because God Is Our Father
Matthew 6:9 –
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” (NKJV)
God relates to us with the heart of a loving Father.
- Because God Gives Peace
Philippians 4:7 –
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (NKJV)
Trusting God brings peace even in uncertainty.
- Because God Is Compassionate
Psalm 103:13 –
“As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him.” (NKJV)
God understands our weakness and cares deeply for us.
- Because God Is Our Refuge
Psalm 46:1 –
“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.” (NKJV)
God is our safe place in every storm.
- Because God Is Wise
Romans 11:33 –
“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!” (NKJV)
God sees the full picture when we only see fragments.
Don’t you think these are more than enough reasons for us to choose to trust Him?
3. WHAT HAPPENS TO ME WHEN I TRUST GOD?
- God Gives Peace
Isaiah 26:3 –
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” (NKJV)
Trust replaces anxiety with peace.
- God Directs My Path
Proverbs 3:5-6 –
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (NKJV)
God faithfully guides those who depend on Him.
- I Become Stable and Unshaken
Psalm 125:1 –
“Those who trust in the LORD Are like Mount Zion, Which cannot be moved, but abides forever.” (NKJV)
Trust produces stability in uncertain times.
- God Becomes My Protection
Psalm 91:2 –
“I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’” (NKJV)
God surrounds His children with His protection.
- Trust Produces Joy and Strength
Psalm 28:7 –
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.” (NKJV)
Trust fills the heart with strength, joy, and praise.
- Trust Leads to Seeing God’s Glory
John 11:40 –
“Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” (NKJV)
Trust positions us to witness God move powerfully in our lives.
4. HOW CAN I LIVE A LIFE TRUSTING GOD?
Proverbs 3:6 (AMPC), says –
“In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.”
The same verse in The Message translation says,
“Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go.”
And the NIV says,
“In all your ways submit to Him.”
To live a life of complete trust in God, we must grow in knowing Jesus daily through His Word and through our personal walk with Him. Trust is built through relationship. The more we know Him, the more confidently we can rely on Him.
Galatians 5:16 (AMPC), says –
“But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].”
A life of trusting God is a life led by the Holy Spirit — listening, responding, and yielding to His guidance daily.
Romans 10:17 (AMPC), says –
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
As we spend time in God’s Word and grow closer to Jesus, we begin to recognize His voice more clearly. We learn to acknowledge Him in every situation and submit our ways to Him completely. Trust becomes natural when our hearts are continually connected to Him.
Conclusion
Trust is not confidence that life will always be easy. Trust is confidence that God will always be faithful. Even when we cannot see His hand, we can trust His heart because His nature as our Father never changes.
No matter what we are going through in life, let us continue to trust our Father God. He will carry us through every season. The One who has called us is faithful and true.
As we keep trusting God with our lives, His glory will manifest in every area of our lives.
Proverbs 3:5 –
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding.”
